How To Create Bootable USB for Windows 10

There are two ways on how to create bootable USB for Windows 10. First way is creating a bootable USB from Windows Media Creation Tool. Second is using a tool called Rufus. I will be showing the ways step by step.

Create a Bootable USB for Windows 10

Through Windows Media Creation Tool

Go to this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Click the Download tool now button and run the downloaded file.

Windows 10 setup window will appear. Click the Accept button when on the Applicable notices and license terms.

When asked “What do you want to do?”, select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC and click Next.

On the “Select language, architecture, and edition” page, you have the options to change the Language, Edition and Architecture.

  • Language: the default language to be used.
  • Edition: you can only use Windows 10.
  • Architecture: 32-bit or 64-bit or both, it depends on what you need. I suggest using only one architecture.

After you have made your selections, click the Next button.

On the page “Choose which media to use”, insert your USB flash drive to your USB port and then select USB flash drive and click Next button.

On the page “Select a USB flash drive”, select the drive where the recently inserted USB flash drive is located. In my case, it is drive E. Then, click on the Next button.

The tool will now download and create a bootable USB for Windows 10. This process will take few minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

Your bootable USB for Windows 10 is ready. You can use it now to get a clean Windows 10 installation.

Through Rufus Tool

We need to download the ISO file for Windows 10. We need to rerun the Windows Media Creation Tool.

Follow the same steps above until you reach the page “Choose which media to use”. Select ISO file instead of USB flash drive. After, click Next button. It will ask you the path where to save the ISO file.

After you have selected the path, the Media Creation Tool will now start to download the Windows 10 ISO file.

Once the Media Creation Tool is done downloading the ISO file, go to this link https://rufus.ie/ to download the latest Rufus tool.

Scroll down to the Download section and click Rufus 3.8. This is the version of the Rufus tool as of this writing. After downloading, execute the downloaded file. It will ask for Administrator access, just allow it.

Once you have opened the Rufus tool, click the Select button as shown in the image and locate the downloaded Windows 10 ISO file. Then, click on the Start button.

It will now start creating the bootable USB for Windows 10. This might take few minutes depending on the speed of your current system. Once, it is done, you may close the tool and remove your USB.
